Coronation of Thai King Scheduled for May 2019

1 January 2019

A statement from the palace today announced the dates of the coronation ceremony for HM King Vajiralongkorn. The coronation ceremony will take place from May 4 to May 6. The Thai monarch will officially be crowned as the tenth king of the Chakri dynasty, Rama X, on May 4.

Following the death of his father on October 13, the designated heir to the throne did not immediately accept the crown. Instead, he advised the leader of the ruling military junta and the Thai parliament that he wanted time to mourn his father before accepting the invitation to ascend the throne. He formally ascended the throne at a special ceremony in Bangkok on an auspicious day that marked 50 days since the passing of his father.

Public holiday
It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it is possible that an extra public holiday could be granted on either May 3 (Friday) or May 6 (Monday)*. Updates will be added here once more is known.

*Monday, May 6 has now been confirmed as a public holiday.

Timetable for the royal coronation ceremony

May 4 (Saturday)
The king will officially be crowned on May 4.

May 5 (Sunday)
A royal parade will take place in Bangkok on May 5. This day will see the inauguration of the king’s official name and signature.

May 6 (Monday)
Events will take place at the Grand Palace in Bangkok on May 6 with HM King Vajiralongkorn meeting with foreign diplomats and members of the public.

Advice for visitors

The Grand Palace is likely to be closed from May 4-6. It is also possible there may be restricted access for rehearsals in the lead up to the coronation. Road closures are also likely to be in effect in the Old City area of Bangkok during early May. Elsewhere, transport should all run as normal. Shops, restaurants, and tourists attractions across the country should also all be open as usual.
