Hotel Review: Thong Ta Resort, Bangkok Airport

Thong Ta Resort and Spa is a budget hotel located close to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi international airport. This makes it a good choice for passengers with a long wait between connecting flights or who just want the convenience of a hotel close to Bangkok airport.

Rooms

For a hotel in the low-price bracket the rooms are very good. The standard single room I booked was modern, pleasantly decorated and spacious. In-room services included refrigerator, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and free wi-fi. The wi-fi speed was good and more than quick enough for catching up with emails, Facebook and Twitter. The bathroom was bright, clean and well laid-out with a large shower area and a good supply of hot water. There is a small balcony area which is handy for those who smoke (no smoking in the rooms) or for airing or drying clothes, but don’t expect much of a view. The air-conditioning was efficient and the only criticism I could make of the room itself was the television which had poor picture quality on all channels. There was an issue on the one night I stayed with loud music from a nearby club which went on until around 2am. I don’t know whether that’s a regular thing or a one-off, but it’s worth mentioning in case you are a light sleeper so remember your earplugs!*

*Update November 2012: I’ve now stayed a number of times here and had no more problems with loud music.

Facilities & Staff

Thong Ta Resort is a low-rise hotel with 70 rooms spread over 5 floors. There are no lifts/elevators, but staff will take your bags up to your room if required. If you need assistance bringing your luggage back down the stairs when you check-out, contact reception. There is a spa and massage area as well as a restaurant, but I didn’t use these during my short stay**. The reception staff were all very courteous and the same applies to the drivers on the round-trip airport shuttle provided by the hotel. The fact that the price of my room included the round-trip transfers made this a bargain overnight stay.

**Update November 2012: Thong Ta Resort have now opened a new wing which does seem to have a lift/elevator installed (I stayed on the ground floor but saw a sign for it!). The superior rooms are sightly more expensive than the standard rooms but do include a few extras including an oversized rain-shower in the bathroom.

Hotel Shuttle Service

I booked my room at Thong Ta Resort online with Agoda. The price included round-trip transfers which were hassle-free and very convenient. I’ve used these services for other Bangkok hotels before and it’s worth noting that not all of the hotel reps stand in the same place in the arrivals hall at Bangkok airport. At the time of writing, the reps for Thong Ta Resort can be found near Door Number 4 in the arrivals hall. If in doubt (or if you can’t see anybody with the Thong Ta Resort name board) ask at the airport information desk and they will help you. The hotel uses its own efficient 24-hour mini-bus shuttle and staff are on hand to help you. Within 10 minutes of entering the arrivals hall I was on the way to the hotel. If you book a round-trip transfer, when you check-in at Thong Ta Resort the reception staff will ask you what time you wish to go back to the airport.

Food

I arrived late and checked out early so I didn’t get to experience the hotel restaurant although the price of my room did include breakfast***. A few minutes’ walk away brings you to On Nuch Road where you will find the usual array of Thai hawker stalls and restaurants as well as a couple of 7-Eleven convenience stores.

***Update November 2012: I’ve now had breakfast at the hotel which is very much a no-frills affair with a choice of American Breakfast (ABF) or Thai breakfast (rice porridge). The ABF is small and nothing to write home about, but a fruit-juice, coffee, eggs and toast was enough to fill a gap in the morning.

Location

Thong Ta Resort is a short 6-minute drive from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport. The hotel is set back from the main On Nuch Road, but is still within easy walking distance of restaurants, bars and food stalls.

Summary

A very good value hotel which is clean and ideal for a short-stay. I paid 780 Baht booking in advance online with Agoda and this price included round-trip transfers and breakfast.
