Following yesterday’s bomb at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, a second improvised explosive device (IED) narrowly avoided causing injuries when it detonated in a canal close to the Chao Phraya River this afternoon. Footage from CCTV cameras showed a plume of water thrown into the air scattering passengers at the Sathorn Pier (Tha Sathorn) boat stop at approximately 1.20pm today. Thai authorities say a pipe bomb was hurled from the overhead bridge (Saphan Taksin). The device narrowly missed a passenger walkway at the pier before exploding in the water. No injuries were reported and boat services have continued to operate following a security operation at the pier.
Sathorn Pier is one of the busiest boat stops on the Chao Phraya River, connecting passengers with the Skytrain service at Saphan Taksin.
