The Skytrain is the elevated electric train that makes getting around Bangkok so much easier as you breeze past the traffic jams on the roads below. There are only 2 lines which means the range is limited, but on the other hand it does make it very easy to use without getting confused about a number of different routes.
The trains are air-conditioned and depart every 5 minutes (and even more frequently in rush hour). The service runs from 06.00 to Midnight. Fares range from 15 Baht to 40 Baht depending on distance travelled. Every station has automated ticket machines with instructions in English, or you can pay for your ticket at the service counter (most staff will understand English and be willing to help you). In addition, the stations at Nana, Siam and Saphan Taksin all have dedicated Tourist Information Centres which are open daily from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Various passes are on sale, including a 120 Baht one-day-pass which offers unlimited trips for the day.
The Sukhumvit Line runs from Mo Chit to On Nut. Useful stops include Victory Monument, Ploenchit (shopping) Nana (nightlife) and Ekamai (Eastern Bus Terminal).
The Silom Line runs from National Stadium (Jim Thompson House) to Saphan Taksin (for Chao Phraya River and boats to Wat Po, Wat Arun and Grand Palace).
Siam Central is the interchange station for changing from one line to another.
The one major drawback with the Skytrain is that they are not very user-friendly for the frail or disabled, as access to the platforms involves climbing a set of stairs and not all stations have elevators.
