It might not be as big or as well-known as Lumphini Park, but Benjasiri Park in Bangkok has a quiet charm and makes for a pleasant escape from some of the excesses of the Thai capital. Benjasiri Park was opened in 1992 in honour of Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday. The park features 12 contemporary art sculptures including a large commemorative coin depicting Queen Sirikit.
Benjasiri Park covers 29 rais of land (approximately 11 acres) and is located on the former site of the Thailand Meteorology Department. Adjacent to the Emporium shopping mall and Phrom Phong BTS Skytrain station, the peaceful green space is a popular recreation area for Thai families, office workers and Bangkok expats.
Featuring a children’s playground, a lake, fountains, gardens, pavilions and sculptures it’s a pleasant space for people of all ages to visit and walk around or just sit and relax in the shade. For those looking for more active exercise, there are designated fitness areas and sports courts where locals play takraw, football and volleyball. As is always the case in Thailand, you’re never too far away from food with hawker stalls out front and refreshment kiosks inside the park.
